Genesis 42-43 Study Guide

Main Idea: In His mercy, God allows us to experience the consequences for our sins to bring us to repentance, and He stands ready to extend forgiveness and grace.

  1. Genesis 37:4 tells us that Joseph’s brothers could not speak peacefully (shalom) to him. Yet, when Joseph sees his brothers, his steward replies “peace (shalom) to you”, and Joseph asks about their welfare (shalom). How does God’s promise of peace to us help us to extend peace to others even when they do not respond in kind?

  2. We talked on Sunday about how God answered Jacob’s prayer for mercy on his sons through Joseph. How has God answered your prayers through others?

  3. Read 2 Corinthians 7:8-10. What does repentance look like in the life of a believer?

  4. What consequences have you experienced (past or present) that God used/is using to reveal your sin and draw you to repentance?

  5. Read Matthew 18:23-34. How does God’s forgiveness to us allow us to forgive more freely? Who in your life might God be calling you to forgive, even if they have not yet demonstrated genuine repentance?

  6. Read Galatians 5:22 and Colossians 3:12. Knowing what we know of God’s kindness (Rom 2:4) what does it mean for a believer to practice kindness?
